There are many structural types of wheeled excavator walking devices, including wheeled tractor chassis using standard car chassis, and tire-type excavators with slightly larger bucket capacity and higher work performance requirements use special tire-type chassis walking devices. Roughly divided into the following categories:

(1) No outriggers, all-wheel drive, the turntable is arranged in the middle of the two axles, and the wheelbase of the two axles is the same. The advantage is that the outrigger is omitted, the structure is simple, it is convenient to work on a narrow construction site, and the maneuverability is good. The disadvantage is that the load on the steering bridge is large when the excavator is walking, and the steering operation is laborious or a hydraulic power assist device needs to be installed. Therefore the running gear of this structural type is only suitable for small-sized tire excavators.

(2) Double outriggers, all-wheel drive, the turntable is biased to the side of the fixed axle (rear axle). Its characteristics are: the load of the steering bridge is reduced, making the steering operation easier; the outriggers are installed on the side of the fixed shaft, which ensures the stability of the excavator during operation. This type of walking device is mostly used in small tire excavators.

(3) Four legs, single-axis drive, and the turntable is away from the center. Its characteristics are: the track of the driving wheel is wide, while the wheel track of the steering wheel is small, and it rotates around the vertical axis when turning; because the wheels are arranged with three fulcrums, the force is better, no suspension swing device is needed, and the turning radius is small when driving , Supported by four legs during operation, good stability. Its disadvantages are: three wheel ruts will be formed when driving on soft ground, the driving resistance will increase, and the lateral stability of the three-pivot chassis is poor. Therefore, the traveling gear of this structure type is only suitable for small excavators.

(4) Four legs, all-wheel drive, the turntable is close to the side of the fixed axle (rear axle). Its characteristics are: the front axle swings, because the center of gravity is behind, so the steering resistance is small, easy to operate, and through the use of large tires and low-pressure tires, it has low requirements on the ground. This type of traveling device is widely used in medium and large excavators.
